Any style works for an Earth Dinner

From a potluck dinner to a masterful multi-course presentation, the key to a successful Earth Dinner is having meaningful discussion at the table to discover the origins of what’s being served: How was it grown? Where did it come from? Who grew it? What is its nutritional value? How does this food connect to your own personal history and those of your guests? If your appetizer could talk, what would it say?

Local, Sustainable and Organic

To the greatest extent possible, try to find foods that are locally produced, seasonal, fresh and flavorful! If they are organically grown that’s even better! And don’t worry – it’s okay if you simply can’t find some ingredients locally. It’s a chance to celebrate the farmers from other regions or countries. If you’re having a potluck dinner, remember to ask your guests to do their best to find out about the origins of the foods they bring to share and how they were grown. If you’re creating a multi-course dinner, check out our Recipes database for some tasty menu ideas. Let the décor tell as much of a story as the food

Look for natural inspiration: flowers, greens, earth colors, candles, natural textures. Rugged or graceful. Simplistic or elegant.

How about a seasonal centerpiece? Think about how you would portray your region, state, city or town. What objects can you find that represent your place on the earth? Or have each person bring an item to contribute to a communal centerpiece you create together before the meal.

Party Favors

Decorate mini pots planted with various herb starters found at your local nursery. Your children will delight in preparing these for your guests while learning about the herbs and their uses. Rosemary, sage, basil, chives and thyme make beautiful favors that can later be transplanted in spring gardens and used in delicious recipes.

You could also wrap one or two wildflower seed packets together with ribbon and place on each guest’s plate to take home.

And of course, reuse, recycle, and return!
Try to stick with organic, natural, recycled or reusable items when decorating the table and serving the food. Maybe even create a centerpiece that doubles as an appetizer!
